Today we had the privilege, as a church, to host a funeral
for a fallen office, Lt. Stuart J. Alexander, who died in the line of duty this
last week. Words cannot describe
the power of the moment when we saw that many officers, men and women who
protect us every day, file into our auditorium. The service was very honoring towards Lt. Alexander and his
family he left behind. Officer
Chuck Freeman officiated and did an outstanding job. At the end of the service, an officer came up and read
a powerful poem that touched everyone in the room. As someone who greatly values the leadership, integrity and protection
that our men and women who wear the uniform provides us, this poem will surely
mean a lot to you as well:
A Part of America Died
Someone killed a policeman today,
And a part of America Died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
Will be buried close to his side.
The culprit who ran over him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights,
And a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
While spending many long and lonely nights.
The beat that he walked was a battlefield;
As if he’d gone off to war.
And the flag that he loved will fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, someone killed a policeman today,
It could happen in your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind locked door,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks the beat on a dark city street,
You’ll find him at each rookie’s side,
For he answered the call, and gave us his all,
And a part of America Died.

To all the men and women who serve their community, we are
forever grateful. Christ sacrificed
His life for all mankind. Those
who wear the blue are willing to make that same sacrifice, and for that I say
that you are more like Christ and you honor His name by all that you do. Thank you.
