Have you ever needed a vacation....from your vacation? I know I have. Now, let's be honest, a vacation with the kids can sometimes mean more work. It's not that we don't love our kids...we do! But when you've got 3 kids and you find yourself in a small hotel room, you suddenly realize why they invented
"suites!" Here are a few tips that I will pass along to leaders who are in desperate need of a break:
1. Make sure you take time away with the kids.
2. Then take time away from the kids (maybe send them to camp, or grandma's).
3. Make sure your vacation is not a "working vacation"...don't bring the laptop.
4. Turn off your cell phone, or don't answere when work calls...train your peeps to handle stuff and don't get mad at them later when they took matters into their own hands.
5. Slow down enough to spend quality time with God. (I highly recommend journaling and a One-Year Bible).
6. Never return form vacation the day before work begins...you need time to wind down.
7. Remember to truly "be there." If you work hard, be sure to play at the same intensity! Have a blast without apology!
8. When you get back and someone says to you "wow, it must be nice to get all that time off," look them in the eye and say "it sure is! You should take time off instead of laying a guilt trip on me you workaholic!"
P.S. Props to Bryan Fiscus and Jason Gerdes for preaching for me...anyone who heard them knows that Bay Area is chock full of talent!
Vacations with kids have put vasectomy in a more urgent and valuable context for me.
