If you want to know the temperature of an organization, put the thermometer in the leader’s mouth. How the Senior Pastor is doing will determine ultimately how the church is doing. How the company is doing will ultimately be determined by who is in charge of it. The truth is that every organization is just a shadow of it’s leader. If a leader is driven by ego, the company/church/organization will be suppressed to serve the leader only. When a leader is off focus, the organization will flounder. When a leader is weak or tired, it is just a matter of time until the attitudes of others will begin to reflect this weakness. This is why Bill Hybels, in his book Courageous Leadership, says that up to 50% of a leader’s time should be spent on “self-care.” If a leader is not healthy, the organization is not healthy. If you are a leader and you are not happy with the organization you lead, take a look in the mirror.
A few years ago, I noticed that our church was not balanced. We were lopsided, with a strong emphasis on evangelism with little on discipleship. I had to ask why. The reason was painful, but the truth is I did not value discipleship personally like I should have, so neither did the church. Once I began to teach discipleship, our small groups took off, a more balanced teaching agenda was put in place, and within a year of this discovery we found ourselves with a much more balanced Bay Area.
How does this impact you? Are you unhappy with your kids? Your church? Your small group? Your sales team? Could they be needing a balanced leader? A changed-for-the-better leader? It’s time to become a reflective leader, who is humble enough to ask “could I be the problem?” If you study 2 Chronicles 7:14, you will see the formula for repentance that leads to a changed “land.” The land is what you have influence over, or in this case, who you have influence over:
“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV).
God uses humble people. Be humble enough to examine yourself.
More on this tomorrow….
First to Weston,
I have a similar story to yours, nobody said I could do it. (start a business) That fueled me, and I got it started quicker than I had hoped. Now that I'm up and running, I catch myself doubting myself. If it's any help to you, what I do is just remind myself that it isn't my ability that determines my success, it's God's. For more on that read Ephesians 3:20.
Now to Bil. I purchased and watched your Exponential Business Conference last year. I also plan on heading up to Corpus this year to see it live. (I moved to the valley since last year, I'll probably come attend with Pastor Loui) My question to you is this...With your passion for serving our Lord and your ministry. How do you keep an upbeat passion and attitude for your real-estate business. I was a unstoppable force when I moved down here to start the business. However I find myself losing a passion for my business as my passion for the ministry increases. However, I know it is simply the responsible thing to run my business with the same passion as before. I look forward to seeing you at EBC 08. I'd love to meet you personally one day just to pick your brain about several things. It was Gods work through you that brought me back into his kingdom a couple years ago.

Hey Bil!
Just wanted to say that I love reading your posts! They constantly are inspiring me and constantly making me examine myself and ministry. It was good to meet you (wow. a couple years ago now) in Dallas at Fellowship's conference.
Thanks again,
Kylie
